What is cloche hat and its origin?

The cloche hat is a bell-shaped hat worn by women. In fact, the word cloche which originates from the French root means a bell. The cloche hat creation dates back to the early twentieth century and has gained some popularity and seen some modifications ever since. Its fashion style then becomes more stylish to even serve as hairstyle shaping tool when worn.

The design pattern of the cloche hat

The cloche hat was made of felt, a textile material of the wool origin, soft and textured enough for a comforting wear. It is designed to cover below the forehead of a woman and almost a part of the eye.

The hat was often decorated to bring out different styles and taste. Embroidery, jewelries and fans feathers are some of the decorations that are used to adorn the product.

It is interesting to know that this hat was so popular to have some definitions and messages attached to it. These messages relates to marital status of a women wearing the hat at the time. The ribbon designs tell it all.  A fixed knot indicated that a lady is married, a colorful bow indicates being single and willing to interact with others freely. An arrow looking ribbon shows a girl is still single but already in a relationship with someone.

Today, these are now obsolete but the cloche hat still serves different purposes and style for women’s fashion especially in cold regions or during winter periods. Cultures like in France and other European nations still use the cloche hat as a dressing style. Church dressing is also complemented with the wearing of the cloche hat.
